The Thin Line between Fleek and Alien

image.jpg

Makeup! I've never been a makeup person, I'm more of a get-up-and-go-go with lipstick and penciled-in brows. Truly, you can get away with many things once your brows are filled in and your lips are colored or moisturized. Now, foundation, concealer, pink-chewy sponges, all the 900 types of brushes, luxury powder, contour sets...... those are another ball game entirely. However in 2016, I promised myself to try something new. Something excruciatingly, painfully new! Plus Ike, PGI's November girl kind of kicked me out of my comfort zone.

Hence, I began my makeup journey, watched a bunch of YouTube videos, insta-stalked some Makeup Artists (MUAs) and here I am, still learning, painting and mispainting. I won't stop till my good is better and my better, best! Anyway, here are 13 things I've learnt on this Makeup journey:

1. It's a thin line between being on fleek and transforming yourself into an extra-terrestrial look-alike

2. My teeth = lipstick Magnet (here's how to fix that!)

3. The pink, chewy, squishy thing (Beauty blender) is not edible and costs more than a tube of lipstick

4. Sephora is pretty cool

5. Makeup is an investment and with the exchange rate all crazy, must be strategically used to maximize utilization (she must not waste lol)

6. I am beautiful with/or without makeup

7. MUA's, a couple of salutes and new respect!  Let's be friends.

8. Apple cider vinegar is the new water! You can use it as a toner, as a weight loss beverage, as a cleaning agent, for your hair, to treat constipation, to solve the Bermuda Triangle mystery.......

9. Sometimes, "moisturize and go", not every time "foundation and cake"

10. My lips get crazy when I wear mascara, they bend into this unnatural shape for some reason (photo 2 below) Does this happen to anyone else?!

11. Making up is actually a great opportunity for "Me-Time".  I just turn on my favorite Spotify playlist and sing with my powder brush (which explains photo 1 below). Then I drop the mic....the brush.....the mic-brush 🎤

12. My eye bags need to go (Here's how to get rid of bags, I'm trying ALL of them!)

13. Along with Apple Cider Vinegar, honey and lemon seem to be the solution to the problems of the world

Stuff I haven't tried : False Lashes, contouring, brow waxing, contouring my collar bone (I did not know that was even a thing!)

Do you wear makeup? How's your journey? What discoveries have you made?

Welcome everyone, to where all the magic happens- my creative space! Hehe, you didn't really think I meant magic, magic, MAGIC! *side-eye*

Anyway, I'm delighted you are here and have been sharing my space with me. This is our 86th blog post! Thanks for all the comments, private messages and support, so yeah, i thought i'd show you where it all goes down. I want to say all my ideas come to me as I sit at my desk and stare intensely into the distance but they don't! They come while I'm in the shower, as all eureka moments do.

This post is dedicated to everyone who reads this blog and a million thanks for sticking with PGI all this while! Greater things coming!

OMS- I Laugh At These Skinny Girls

image.jpg

Off my shelf (OMS), today, is Tolu Akinyemi's exquisitely crafted poetry collection, "I Laugh At These Skinny Girls." Poetry for People Who Hate Poetry.

He literally just made poetry accessible to those of us that zoned-out and nodded our way through Ulysses in Literature class. Wait....did we read Ulysses? I can't even remember but we read a bunch of JP Clarks, I think.

I can assure you, if Tolu's book was a literature book in SS2, my arm would be permanently raised in Literature class.....instead of the eye-dodging professional I became with my Lit. teacher. The fiction selection was a bit zone-out-friendly too...

Teacher: Have you all read chapter 1 to 3 of Anthills of the Savannah?

Students (chorus of lies): Yesssssss!

Teacher: Ike, mention 5 themes from Anthills of the Savannah.

Me: *Zoned out already, thinking about Britney Spears new song* Errrrr.......Ants?

*Blink*

Rough times.

Anyway, if you love poetry, you'll love it and if you hate poetry, so would you! If you like being amused, it's packed with wit, while touching on significant and current issues in our society, so get a copy here or there!

Happy New Year!

image.jpg

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I have zero New Year resolutions! Yay! I do have goals though. Dangerously ambitious goals relating to all aspects of my life; for one, God and I need to go back to our 5&6 status; I need to build on my professional skills; need to build on my kitchen portfolio-the amount of rice I ate in 2015, could probably fill a 3000 square feet house; need to learn to use chopsticks-no more asking for forks at Chinese restaurants; I need to say "Splendid" when I'm pleased and not "Yay"- overused that expression; need to stop saying "Ah!" when I'm surprised, as the Yoruba girl that I am. I might resume again in 2017, though.

Most importantly, I have huge goals to get to know my readers more and to express my appreciation more often. So, thank you for the support, love, comments, messages, wishes on PGI in 2015. I pray God makes this year fun and full of life for us and that we  continue to learn as a community.

What are your 2016 goals?

4 Surprising Things That Happened to Me in 2015

image.jpg

1. I became a Justin Bieber fan!

I blame his new album. I can't believe I started liking him! I had been so indifferent for so long but now I'm a fan of his music, I can't deny. After watching him perform at some show in New York during Thanksgiving, I guess it's safe to say, I'm now a bieliber...senior citizen's category.

2. I moved to a city that I had always flirted with but never really took seriously

Remember when you were single and you'd flirt with that cute guy at work, like every other day and then suddenly you guys are married...... in less than a month?

You don't?

Yeah well, something that unlikely happened to me. It was pretty weird. I hadn't ever imagined I'd end up here but i'm delighted i did! *Flirt* *Flirt* *Wink*

3. I had so many Action-packed dreams

This I blame entirely on my devotion to Blacklist and Game of thrones, more Blacklist though. Ed and I also watched mostly action movies this year, for some reason. Thank God, I had Downton Abbey to dilute all that adrenaline.

Hmmm....it would have been nice to dream about Downton Abbey though, drink tea, eat crumpets and weetabix and listen to Adele.

4. I twitted for the first time ever!

Ok, that isn't so surprising. Nope wait, it completely is! It's 2015 and I was still a Twitter-Virgin in October! I liked to imagine I was the only Twitter virgin out there but probably wasn't...*shrug*. Anyway, I'm now a proud account holder with 83 tweets, follow me @pagesbyike and let's get random. Another surprise: I had thought I would be a chronic twitter.....tweeter..... (do they call the people who tweet, twitters, tweeters or Twitties? Smh, I'm so far behind). Strangely, i'm not too addicted to it but i am developing this new love for it though.

What surprises did you have in 2015? Married in less than a month? In your flirt-city suddenly? Dreaming about John Snow's ressurection too often?

Merry Christmas!

image.jpg

Merry Christmas, Everyone! I hope you are having an awesome season.

I apologize for going MIA for a couple of days, y'all know it's completely out of character. My last two weeks have been pretty wild and full of unexpected incidents. I'll give you the gist at a later date.

How's Christmas going? What are you up to? I spent mine with family and spent like 5 days opening a huge gift, that God unexpectedly dropped at my door! Yay, God! Way to go, papa!

How are you celebrating your season?

Remember Christmas without Christ is just 'mas' which is pretty random. 'Merry Mas' .....makes no sense at all.

That amazing cozy feeling you get from the Christmas season, the sleigh-bell rings, the carols, the 'ho-ho-ho's, gift boxes, the cheer, the tidings, reindeer antlers, santa hats, Christmas trees sold in traffic (for Lagosians), jollof rice, snow....all that magic...is no magic at all; It's really the effect of Christ and the great love he has for us! Let's make sure this love goes round, there's more than enough for us all!

Season's Greetings from PGI!

 ❤️
